Eric Muensterman is a passionate printmaker whose work is deeply rooted in creative exploration, the tactile nature of printmaking, and the mentorship of influential artists. His journey began in high school when he was first introduced to relief-style printing on a Dick Blick press. Under the guidance of his father, who passed down a set of tools from the 70s, Eric developed a profound connection with the act of gouging and carving—a process he describes as “holding controlled havoc,” where raw material is transformed into something uniquely expressive.
Throughout his career, Eric’s artistic development has been greatly shaped by the work of two key influences: Christopher Wormell and Fritz Eichenberg. Wormell’s masterful use of color, texture, and design balance inspired Eric to explore the dynamic interplay of vibrant hues and intricate details, while maintaining a harmonious visual composition. This influence helped Eric develop a style that is both emotionally charged and visually compelling.
On the other hand, Eichenberg’s signature use of fine lines and painstaking attention to detail resonated deeply with Eric. The precision and intricate layering found in Eichenberg’s prints helped Eric refine his approach to creating detailed, finely etched compositions, where every line contributes to a larger narrative. This influence has been pivotal in Eric’s pursuit of capturing the smallest nuances in texture and form.
In 2017, Eric transitioned into teaching, sharing his love of printmaking with students and guiding them through the cathartic and transformative process of creating art. From Solar Plate printing to textile art, Gelli prints, and large-scale rubber blocks, he has introduced students to a wide range of techniques, encouraging them to explore their creative potential. His teaching philosophy focuses on fostering enthusiasm, patience, and the joy of discovery, empowering students to find their unique artistic voice through print.
Eric’s work continues to evolve as he pushes the boundaries of printmaking, using color, texture, fine detail, and design balance to convey raw emotional energy. Whether through his personal creations or his role as a teacher, Eric remains dedicated to helping others discover the power and beauty of printmaking.
